Manual Lymphatic Drainage
55 minutes, £60
The lymphatic system helps remove toxins, excess fluid and waste products from our bodies and is an important part of our immune system. If your lymphatic system is sluggish, it can lead to ill-health.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised technique that uses slow, light, rhythmical movements which stimulates the lymphatic vessels so that they contract in a more organised and effective way.
The subtle movements activate lymph flow and encourages the drainage of fluid from the tissues into the lymphatic system, cleansing the body of dead cells, bacteria and other waste products.
Conditions that MLD is said to help with include:
Chronic venous disease
Post injury/Trauma healing (eg sports injury, wrist fracture, torn ligaments, burns)
Swollen ankles and legs in pregnancy
The number of treatments required will depend on your specific condition. We recommend that initially you have 2 visits within a 2-week period. The first visit involves a thorough consultation, a short treatment with MLD and after care advice. The second treatment involves a consultation about the effects of the first treatment, a longer MLD treatment and further after care advice.
Additional sessions can then be booked as required. We do offer 6 for 5 on our treatments and this includes the MLD therapy.
For further information about the MLD therapy, please call Maxine or Frankie on 01484 303786.
Myofascial Release Therapy
40 minutes, £55. Available for bookings Tuesdays and Fridays. Introductory offer: £44 in August and September
The myofascial system comprises the muscles (‘myo’) and the connective tissue (‘fascia’) in and around your muscles, organs and bones. It is a fibrous network of collagen and elastin fibres surrounded by a fluid called ground substance which acts as a shock absorber. When the fascial system is restricted, the ground substance becomes thicker, resulting in less lubrication for the soft tissue and myofascial structures.
In a normal, healthy state, fascia has the ability to stretch and move, allowing the muscles and connective tissues to move freely as we move our body. But if the body experiences trauma through surgery, an accident, inflammation, postural poor habits, stress or emotional trauma, the fascia will lose its flexibility and can become hard, dehydrated and stuck, leading to myofascial pain. Myofascial pain can be generated from the muscles or connective tissues that are restricted by tight fascia and therefore unable to move freely. Pain can also be generated from damaged myofascial tissue itself, sometimes at a ‘trigger point’ where a contraction of muscle fibres has occurred.
Myofascial Release is a technique used to alleviate tension, restrictions and adhesions in the fascia in order to restore balance and function. Research has shown that Myofascial Release improves chronic neck pain, chronic shoulder pain, chronic lower back pain, symptoms of fibromyalgia and other soft tissue aches, pains, tension and restrictions. As well as decreasing pain, the therapy can reduce stiffness, increase flexibility and improve function and movement.
Fascia contains larger amounts of collagen and water than muscle and so it needs to be worked in a different way to regular massage techniques. The gentle technique uses low load, long duration stretches to release the fascia, release muscular tightness and restore optimum muscle and myofascial function. The therapist does not use oils to perform the Myofascial Release so that they can feel deeper into the layers of the fascia until the release is felt.
A course of treatments is recommended to obtain the maximum benefits.
